Planning a kids room that can grow

January 28, 2026

A nursery becomes a toddler room faster than the receipt fades. The most useful pieces are the ones with a second life: a crib that becomes a toddler bed, a glider that moves to a reading corner, a shelf that still fits picture books in kindergarten.

Leave a clear floor oval for play. Storage should be low enough for a child to put toys back, with one taller bookcase anchored to a stud for the things you do not want dumped.

Bunks are a space win after about age six. Look for a ladder that can swap sides and a guard that is already on the top bunk. Measure the ceiling before you fall for a tall stair bunk. Many bedrooms in older New Jersey houses run shorter than a catalog photo suggests.

Color can live in a chair, a rug, or a painted chest. Keep the bed frame in a finish you will still like when the room belongs to a teenager.
